The "Minimalist Family Camping" Book Review
2 things to know about camping:
- new campers want to know what's least gear they need to go camping
- experienced campers have too much gear!
Step forward mum of two Briony Hartley, who came to our attention last year with her website "minimalistfamilycamping.com", and has now written a book of the same name. Briony is on a quest to help get families camping, or as she puts it "swap screen time for wild time".

First a bit about this book...
What is the book about?
A lot more than the name suggests!
If all camper needs to be minimal is a good checklist on a page, then this book has another 137 pages with hints, tips, recipes and journal space. It places itself comfirtably between being a guide to camping, and a lifestyle book.
Who is 'Minimalist Family Camping' for?
New campers, or soon to be campers would get the most benefit from the book, as it has great suggestions for "before you start camping". But similarly any campers who are open to reviewing their set up, becoming more eco' (a big theme in the book), or want inspiration on how to de-clutter, would enjoy this book.
The back cover; sounds familiar!
Who is the book not for?
If you've camped for years, are an early adopter of the latest camping products and gadgets, have a huge trailer and love your set up, then whilst this book may prove to be a eureka moment, it's probably not for you (although the irony of being sat outside your 5* set up reading it would be fantastic!).
When would I read it?
The book is clearly based upon experience, and so feels like a good friend giving you advice as you read it. So when would you want to listen to that friend?
This could be the year before a first camping trip, a week before, or even at a campsite to enjoy the liberating suggestions of the book whilst in their natural habitat.
What are the chapters?
- Minimalist Family Camping
- The Minimalist's Essentials
- How to Pack
- Epilogue
- My Camping Journal
- Conclusion
What's Kids Camping Store's view?
Here at Kids Camping Store, we like this book a lot. Most camping advice is aimed at parents and experienced campers, and tries to get them to spend more money on items they often don't need.
This book is directed towards (but not exclusively for) families. It reminds us why we got into camping and helps bring us back there, and is somehow a very relaxing read.
We especially liked this line; "minimalism is the answer to the problem you didn't know you had".
Where can I get the book?
The book is available from Amazon in both Kindle and Paperback editions. You can find it by clicking here.
