5 Tips for a Great Family Camping Trip

Whether you're new to camping, experienced, or returning with your family, we have 5 top tips that are guaranteed to make sure that your next trip is magical for the kids..... and you!

1) CHOOSE "FRIENDS TIME" OR "FAMILY TIME"

Camping with friends and their families, or going just by yourselves, offers two very different, very special experiences.

  • CAMPING WITH FRIENDS: Once you have kids, seeing friends, let alone getting to talk to them for more than 10 seconds uninterrupted and (dare we say it) have a drink, can become a distant memory!  Going camping is a great way to finally have that catch up you've not managed for the past few months
  • CAMPING JUST WITH YOUR OWN FAMILY: How often you you and your family get a spell together to relax without the daily grind?  No supermarket to dash around?  No laundry to wash, rooms to tidy, clothes to iron or fold?  A couple of days camping gives all of your family a unique time to re-connect with each other without the distractions of modern life; take it

most camp with friends, but camping offers unique  family-time

Both experiences are magical, so we advise that you pick the one that you feel you're not getting enough of, and make that your next camping trip.  Next time... you can do the other!

2) BE PREPARED (& USE OUR CHECKLIST!)

Running through a checklist may be the best 10 minutes you'll spend before going camping.  Ultimately, once you've pitched your tent it's best if you have everything you need.

Fortunately, the path to camping is a well-trodden one and camping checklists have already been made by those who have remembered, and forgotten, what's needed.

Click here to read the Kids Camping Store checklist.  We've designed it to help you consider everything, and you just need to pick out what's right for you, and what isn't!   We suggest you click here and then:

  • print it
  • score through the things you don't need
  • add any of your own little extras

You can even send us a photo of your list via WhatsApp, and we'll send a personalised clean copy back to you!

3) PUSH BEDTIME BACK A COUPLE OF HOURS

Whatever time your kids go to bed, it's unlikely that they will go to (and stay in) bed at that time when they're camping.  After all, it's probably light, and it's very exciting.

But come close and we'll let you into the big secret...

...it's fine!

Kids Camping by a Campfire After Dark

letting kids stay up later than normal gives them new experiences

Your kids can have a lie in the next day, and you don't need to worry that you'll ruin their normal bedtime routine, because camping is so different from home that they won't associate camping bedtime with home bedtime at all.

So let them enjoy their holidays.  If bed time is 19:00 at home then still have a bedtime, but make it 21:00, or 21:30.

As a result:

  • you'll have a 2 hours with your kids that you don't normally get
  • your kids will have new experiences of the world as the sun goes down
  • you won't be arguing with them to go back to bed
  • you'll make their holiday that bit more magical (high-fives all round)

4) STILL PRIORITISE GOOD SLEEP FOR ALL OF YOU

So going to sleep later is a great thing, but if you want to feel ready to take on the day tomorrow, you and your kids will all need a good nights sleep.  In short: great days follow a great night's sleep.

For adults, make sure you have a supportive bed, warm duvet or sleeping bags, and don't forget to take pillows!

Kids also need to be comfortable and "not too hot, not too cold".

Help is at hand!  Find your kids age by clicking on our "guide to sleep" to find out what they should sleep in, on, and under.

5) TAKE YOUR LUXURY

Last but not least remember that camping is magical for kids, but you've earned a rest to.  You've made a checklist, you've played car-tetris, and you've given your family a magical experience.

So have a think; what's that luxury for you to sit back with and enjoy?

  • a good book
  • your favourite drink
  • your favourite music
  • a phone call to that long-lost friend

Picture yourself once the kids have gone to bed, enjoying doing that one thing that is making you smile, and make sure you do it!
